Computational Science and Engineering

Master of Science (M. Sc.)

Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) has become an essential discipline in research and product development. It is developing rapidly, with a focus on the future. Modelling and simulation supplement theory and experiment by considering scientific results critically, thus helping drive product developments forward efficiently.

The computer simulation always delivers higher quality results for numerous questions and problems in science and engineering, medicine, economics and the life sciences.

If you have successfully completed your Bachelor's degree and have knowledge and expertise in the fields of applied mathematics, computer science, and in an engineering or life sciences discipline, and wish to study this in greater depth, then the CSE Master's degree course is exactly the right one for you! It builds on the Bachelor's degree of the same name, but is also a very interesting advanced course for related Bachelor's degree programmes in mathematics, engineering, life sciences, computer science, physics and similar fields of study. In cooperation with the University of Ulm, our practically-oriented yet research-focused programme in four semesters will enable you to deal with problems from the fields of mathematical modelling, optimisation and numerical simulation of real-life processes in nature and engineering.

Prerequisites

For the Master's degree programme CSE you should have knowledge and expertise in the fields of applied mathematics, computer science, and a discipline of engineering or life sciences.

To be admitted to the Master's CSE, you will need a Bachelor's qualification with above-average examination results in the degree programme CSE or in a degree programme with essentially the same content. Also admitted are specially-qualified graduates of degree programmes in the fields of mathematics, IT, engineering and science (at a German or foreign university). Or those with an equivalently recognised qualification with the level of at least three years of study, with the scope and standard of knowledge and expertise equivalent to that gained in the Bachelor's degree programme CSE at the University and University of Applied Sciences – and which complies with the subject requirements for the Master's degree programme.

A Bachelor's qualification with an overall grade of 2.5 or better counts as having "above-average" examination results. If you do not have a final degree qualification yet, by the application deadline you need to have examination results for your course for at least 140 credit points, with a credit-weighted average grade of 2.7 or better.

If you cannot fulfil these prerequisites, you will need to prove your suitability for the Master's degree programme in an admissions test, in the form of a successful selection interview.

Course schedule

Over a total of four semesters, the Master's degree programme CSE will give you in-depth knowledge of numerical simulation and high-performance computing, as well as offering a broad range of individual specialisation – with elective modules in applied mathematics, computer science, engineering and life sciences.

These individual subjects are linked together in an interdisciplinary way. After successful completion of the degree programme you will be awarded the academic degree title "Master of Science".

Career prospects

As well as opening up the chance to do a PhD, the Master's degree programme CSE provides many career options. After completing the Master's degree programme, you will be equipped to take on management roles in research and development teams in different industries; to lead a simulation department; to work in method and simulation development and in scientific research in universities and institutes; or to teach at a higher education establishment. Naturally, these activities can also be performed internationally.

The Master's degree programme is designed for future management who are able to think across different disciplines. Thanks to the substantial involvement of the IHK Ulm in the degree programme CSE, it is primarily small and medium-sized businesses from the region who are highly interested in graduates of the degree programme CSE.

However, there is also a high demand for graduates beyond the region.

Certified quality

By deciding to undertake a quality-assured degree programme at the Ulm University of Applied Sciences you are well prepared for the future. All the Bachelor's and Master's degree courses are accredited. As part of the accreditation, the feasibility of the degree programme, the contents of the course of study and the suitability of the course's graduates for the requirements of their future careers are assessed. This means that you will receive a degree qualification which is recognised and quality-certified, which will help you with the recognition of your degree programme – both nationally and internationally. The accreditation of the degree programmes at the Ulm University of Applied Sciences offers students and employers a reliable guide regarding the quality of the degree programmes.
