Data Science in Medicine

Medicine has undergone a huge transformation.Information and communication systems evolve, clinical studies for developing improved medication or treatments need to be planned and implemented, national and international standards change.All this requires the integration of medicine, documentation and computer science.Qualified specialists are needed who are able to usefully apply the rapidly-developing possibilities of computer science.

With its interdisciplinary focus, the degree programme Data Science in Medicine (DSM) – which can be completed in seven semesters – pursues precisely this objective.Alongside a grounding in mathematics and statistics, the course educates students in the three fields of medicine, documentation and computer science.Up-to-date and practically-relevant training is guaranteed, thanks to close cooperation with the many hospitals and pharmaceutical companies in the Ulm region.

You can apply for the degree programme DSM if you have an entrance qualification for a university of applied sciences, a subject-specific higher-education entrance qualification, a general qualification for university entrance or a comparable qualification.Preliminary practical experience is not required for this degree programme.

You should also have good analytical skills, the ability to think in terms of abstract concepts and an interest in working cooperatively in an interdisciplinary team.Applicants coming from a medical career are also very welcome.

Course schedule

The medical component of the course covers pathology, modern diagnostic methods, and conservative and surgical therapies.These subjects stand in contrast to the computer science aspect, which includes programming, databases and information systems, computer networks as well as data protection and data security.Statistics and biometrics are core subjects for planning and evaluating clinical studies.During the sixth semester, you will be introduced to application scenarios for medical documentation and computer science in the healthcare sector as part of your practical study semester.It serves as an introduction to independent project-related work in your future career, under specialist guidance.The degree programme concludes after seven semesters with a Bachelor of Science.

Typical tasks in the pharmaceutical industry include planning, implementing and evaluating clinical studies for the development of new medication and treatment procedures.In hospitals, you will be useful in the controlling department and for operating information systems.In research institutes, you could be responsible for developing documentation systems and for setting up and operating computer networks.In the medical software industry, documentalists come up with and implement documentation processes within hospital information systems.

Experience shows that the degree programme opens up excellent career opportunities.Medical documentation processes in clinical research and the healthcare sector are progressively being pervaded by information technology, and are also increasingly embedded in complex IT applications.For this reason, documentalists are needed in the appropriate occupational areas who, alongside a thorough knowledge of medical documentation, also have a deep understanding of computer science methodology and practice.Therefore, you will be in great demand as a graduate of the degree programme DSM.
