Focusing on the whole vehicle – from the drivetrain, the engine and gearbox technology, the chassis and vehicle construction with body and interior, right through to the electrical system and the electronics. The design, development and testing of vehicles of all kinds lies at the heart of the degree program Automotive Engineering (FZ).Furthermore, improved manufacturing techniques and efficiency, as well as recyclability and environmental compatibility play an important role, as does vehicle safety.
If you want to develop or build the car of tomorrow, then you should choose this degree program. The seven semester course will cover calculation methods and design rules in detail. You will also acquire knowledge of numerical methods and simulation techniques, as well as learning about mechatronics. To provide you with a solid foundation for this specialist knowledge, in this mechanical engineering-related degree program you will also receive a grounding in general engineering principles. To tailor your course to your personal preferences, in the main study period you can choose between the two course specializations "Design and Development” and "System and Drive Technologies".
You can also take this degree program with the Ulm Model or with in-depth practical experience.
You can apply for the degree program FZ if you have an entrance qualification for a university of applied sciences, a subject-specific higher-education entrance qualification, a general qualification for university entrance or a comparable qualification. In addition, evidence must be submitted that a pre-study internship of 12 weeks' duration has been completed. If you have not completed a pre-study internship before making your application, you may still apply. In this case, you can have the option of completing the pre-study internship by the start of lectures in the fourthsemester.Furthermore, the two-week preparatory course can be used to count towards the pre-study internship, if you attend regularly and participate successfully.Applicants who have completed an apprenticeship or practical training at school in the field of metalworking may be completely or partially exempted from having to do the pre-study internship. You can find further details in the flyer Recognition of school and vocational training.
Furthermore, you will need an understanding of mathematical and scientific interrelationships and an enthusiasm for technology.
The seven-semester course is divided into a basic study period and a main study period. In the basic study period, which includes all modules up to the end of the second taught semester, subjects such as mathematics, physics, materials science, mechanics of materials, CAD, design engineering and manufacturing processes are taught. Then, in the main study period, you can choose between the specializations “Design and Development” and “System and Drive Technologies”.After successful completion of this degree program you will be awarded the academic degree title “Bachelor of Engineering”.

Becoming an automotive engineer will open up a broad range of careers in the most diverse sectors, demanding different types of specialist knowledge. For example, after completing your studies, you could work in design engineering, in industrial design, in manufacturing and production, in sales and service, in research and development, in human resources or in quality assurance. You will be able to find work not only in the automotive and supplier industry, but also in scientific establishments, testing and certification authorities, engineering offices or in the public sector.
Thanks to a lack of qualified experts, as an automotive engineer, you have excellent prospects for starting your career.According to an analysis of skills shortages by the German Federal Employment Office in December 2014, there is a shortage of automotive experts right across Germany, particularly in the western states.Due to the local economic structure, there is an above-average demand for engineers here (automotive centers, aerospace industry etc).Furthermore, ever-shorter production cycles in automotive engineering ensure excellent career prospects for automotive engineers.
