Systems Engineering and Management – Mechanical Engineering

Engineering products and processes are becoming increasingly complex. Making these manageable and realisable is the task of systems engineering.Here, systems-thinking is becoming increasingly important.Customer requirements must be documented early on, development processes defined and design procedures structured in every detail, right up to the handover of the finished product – without losing sight of the overall concept.

The degree programme Systems Engineering and Management will give you the specialist knowledge you need to handle these tasks successfully in industry. The course is offered in four variants with different specialisation subjects for this reason.The three-semester Master's degree programme is the result of cooperation between multiple departments at Ulm University of Applied Sciences, with the goal of providing an attractive further qualification for Bachelor graduates of engineering degrees, who are aiming for a future role in management.

The specialisation “Mechanical Engineering” (SYM) will give you sound knowledge of selected scientific fields, as well as an overview of available technologies and methods.One topic is industrial design engineering, following the tradition of the Ulm School of Design (HfG).

To apply for the Master’s degree programme SYM you need an above-average qualification in a technically-oriented degree from a German university or a comparable foreign university – with a standard study period of at least three years and course content corresponding to at least 180 ECTS credit points.Furthermore, you should have sound knowledge and skills; equivalent to that obtainable at the Ulm University of Applied Sciences in the Bachelor's degree programmes Mechanical Engineering or Automotive Engineering.Other prerequisites are a good knowledge of German and English, as well as successful participation in a selection interview.

If you are not able to provide complete evidence of the knowledge and skills stated above before starting your studies on the Master's degree programme, but (due to the quality of your first degree and the result of the selection interview) it is to be expected that you will be able to complete the degree programme successfully, you may be admitted: on the condition that you acquire the missing knowledge within one semester.

Course schedule

The course has a modular structure.The standard study period of the full-time course is three semesters.The course plan is structured into four subject groups, the contents of which are aligned with the latest findings from the mechanical engineering and automotive engineering sectors.The course plan comprises advanced engineering knowledge in important future-oriented topics, broadened by the economics subjects necessary for managerial tasks.

The mathematical/scientific foundation includes maths and physics subjects which are not taught in the mechanical engineering-oriented Bachelor’s degree programmes and offers a more detailed study of scientific investigation and analysis methods.Primarily under the heading of systematic development, the subject group “Systems Engineering” scientifically reinforces the basic knowledge learned in the Bachelor’s degree programmes. In five modules, it uses examples to go into greater detail.“Industrial Design Engineering” is a core module, flanked by the subjects “Design Methods”, “New Materials” and two alternative modules of your choice.The subject group “Management” will teach you the skills you need (in addition to scientific and engineering skills) for successful project management in development fields.Here 2 compulsory modules and another 2 elective modules must be completed.The subject group “Scientific Working” concludes the course with a project and the Master’s Thesis.After successful completion of the degree programme, you will be awarded the academic degree title “Master of Engineering”.
