FAQs on lectures and examinations
When and in what form will lectures start?
Like all other universities in the State of Baden-Württemberg, at THU, lectures for the 2020 Summer Semester will begin on April 20, 2020. THU is currently working according to the following provisional timetable:

Since Monday,
May 18, 2020, we are able to offer practical laboratory classes again at Ulm University of Applied Sciences in a reduced form for small groups. Naturally, these classes will only take place with THU's applicable protective measures and hygiene regulations. You can read about these on our website. If laboratory classes are on offer for you, your lecturers will invite you to the relevant classes. For those of you who are currently living so far away from Ulm that you cannot visit individual classes in person, THU will issue regulations ensuring you are not disadvantaged with regard to the various deadlines/the course schedule (excepting the purely time-related aspect).
We are currently working on the assumption that most of you will be able to take part in online classes from home. However, the student workstations in the THU buildings are fundamentally also available for participating in online classes – you must, of course, comply with the currently-applicable minimum distance rules and requirements for gatherings. Additionally, the PC Pool C011 in the Prittwitzstrasse building is also open for this purpose. Please get in touch with us immediately if you have any problems in this regard.
Are examinations taking place?
Regular examinations with examinations being taken in person are currently not possible. However, final thesis colloquiums for written assignments and theses continue to be possible in certain circumstances. Please get in touch with the responsible lecturer to find out more.
Regarding the examinations at the end of the Summer Semester,
THU continues to make every effort to conduct the examinations in the form specified by the examination regulations. However we are also providing a basis enabling individual examination formats to be changed. If applicable, these changes must be announced to you several weeks in advance. From today's perspective, it is possible that the planned examination period may have to be extended slightly into the first week of August, due to the reduced capacity of the examination rooms (resulting from the restrictions due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19)).

Are there special course and examination regulations for the 2020 Semester?
With due consideration of the special circumstances in the current semester, the THU Senate has issued special course and examination regulations. These specify the following points in particular:
- Deadlines which would result in a loss of the right to take examinations if you missed them during the 2020 Summer Semester, will be extended by one semester without you needing to make an application. (This means you do not have to go to examinations which you believe you have been unable to prepare for sufficiently.)
- Examination formats may be used which deviate from those specified in the course and examination regulations. If this is the case, you will be informed sufficiently in advance of the examination.
- The deadline for de-registering from examinations has been extended: if you do not turn up for an examination, this counts as an approved withdrawal from the examination.
- In order to ensure infection protection in examination situations as well, written examinations can only be taken in relatively small groups. It is therefore possible that, due to the reduced capacity of the examination rooms, examinations may have to be scheduled during the first week of August as well! For this reason, we ask you to de-register in LSF from the examinations you do not wish to take – as soon as possible. This creates transparency about the number of participants in the examination and helps us with our examination planning.

Does the extension of the lecture-free period affect Bachelor's or Master's theses?
The registration deadlines and the completion period for your Bachelor's or Master's thesis remains the same. The submission deadlines are also unchanged and you must adhere to them. You can apply to the examination committee to have your submission deadline extended, but you must provide individual justification for your application. The best thing to do is get in touch with your supervising professor, especially if you cannot conduct your thesis as originally planned.
Will the deadlines to reserve places on elective modules and language courses change?
No! Please register via the LSF online portal.
Will the application phase for the 20/21 Winter Semester be postponed?
Yes. Due to the corona crisis and the associated effects upon this year's Abitur examinations, the hochschulstart.de application portal will open later. The application phase for the 2020/2021 Winter Semester will start on July 1, 2020 and finish on August 20, 2020 (cut-off date).

How and from where can I get financial support for my studies during the corona crisis?
Are you wondering how to finance your studies during the corona crisis? The presentation
Financial Support for Students during the Corona Pandemic, Ulm Students' Union lists the possibilities for financial support. In addition to interest-free loans from the
Development Loan Corporation (KfW), it is now possible to receive grants for the months of June, July and August, which do not need to be repaid.
Will the corona crisis affect the standard study period?
Yes. Due to the corona crisis, the standard study period will be extended by one semester by law. This is especially important for students who receive a BaFöG grant: because the maximum duration for financial assistance is linked to the standard study period – as per the State Higher Education Act – the longest period you can receive the BAföG for has also been increased by one semester at the same time.
How do I get my THU card (Studierendenausweis)?
If you have not collected your card in person, Student Services will send it to you by post, after informing you via e-mail. Please send your questions to SSC@THU.de
How do I get proof of enrollment on a course?
The same way as usual, via the self-service portal.
I'm on my practical semester. How can I acquire my specified "time present"?
As long as the company or institute remains open, then all is business as usual. If the partner company or institute closes, sets up a home office for you, or other conditions of your practical study semester change, we will seek a solution for these exceptional circumstances.
Who can I go to with my questions?
With immediate effect, the SSC is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9:30am to 12 noon. You can telephone us on 0731 50 28025, or students can visit us in person in the Service Corridor. If you have something urgent to discuss, please make an appointment with us. You must comply with our THU hygiene regulations!
E-mails to SSC@thu.de, Master@thu.de, dual@thu.de, Gebuehren@thu.de will continue to be processed promptly. Inquiries made by post will also be processed.
Can I do a semester in a foreign country? We currently advise all students against doing a semester in a foreign country. Please seek advice from the International Office. The application process for future semesters in a foreign country continues to take place as normal. Applications for the 2020/21 Winter Semester are possible.
How will recognition of the practical semester be handled if the required "time present" of 100 days cannot be achieved?
The decision to recognize a practical semester is based upon whether you have acquired the competencies as defined in the module handbook. The decision regarding recognition is taken by the responsible internship office. In addition, the following rules apply:
Practical semesters can also be recognized if the "time present" is less than 100 days. However, the "time present" must be at least 70 days.
- Days spent working remotely (from home) also count towards your "time present". (In this case, "present" means" instigated and monitored by the company".)
The practical semester can also be split – i.e. you can catch up on missing days later on. This could also take place in a different company.
General FAQs
Are the buildings at the University of Applied Sciences closed? The buildings at the Prittwitzstrasse, Albert-Einstein-Allee and Eberhard-Finckh-Strasse sites are open with reduced opening times. At all three sites, the opening times are from 7 am to 6 pm, Monday to Saturday. The University of Applied Sciences is closed on Sundays and public holidays. In the interests of ensuring the greatest possible protection from infection, we recommend our students stay at home. The following applies to the THU premises: all those present in the University of Applied Sciences' buildings are obliged to adhere to the latest rules of conduct issued by the State of Baden-Württemberg – in particular regarding the ban on gatherings of more than 2 people in a public space.
Is the library open?
The library continues to offer its services, but personal contact should be avoided. You can make orders from the library catalog by sending an e-mail to
bibliothek@thu.de. Here you can request your desired pickup time, so that the media can be issued without personal interaction.
Is the Mensa open?
The cafeterias and Mensas are closed during the semester vacations. The closure periods are as follows:

The drinks and food dispensing machines are also still available to use. You must comply with the infection protection regulations: entry only with a face mask covering at least your mouth and nose, keep at least 1.5 m away from everybody else, disinfect your hands and pay without cash using your student ID card.
