Biotechnology Instrumentation

In education and research, biotechnology (instrumentation) is concerned with the equipment and processes used in biotechnology and the related field of medical engineering. In the field of biophotonics, we are researching disinfection using UV radiation or visible light to reduce legionella bacteria or staphylococcus bacteria, but also non-invasive, spectroscopic online determination of substance concentration in bioreactor media. Bioreactors themselves (i.e. technical systems to multiply and use microorganisms and cells) also feature in biotechnology instrumentation. For example, research groups not only use and develop bioreactors for bacteria and fungi, but also for cartilage tissue engineering – where human cells are used to grow human cartilage tissue as required.
